The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has taken swift action by arresting Mr Ekere Sunday Ebong, a 55-year-old lawyer residing at Plot 40, L Line in Ewet Housing Estate, Uyo, following a distressing family altercation that was captured in a viral video on social media.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Odiko MacDon, at the state Command headquarters in Ikot Akpanabia, expressed deep concern and condemned the dehumanizing assault on the woman involved.

SP MacDon confirmed that the Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr. Olatoye Durosinmi, ordered the immediate arrest of Mr. Ebong, given the severity of the incident.

The suspect, known for a history of perpetrating violent acts against his wife, was apprehended and is currently in police custody awaiting legal proceedings. The PPRO stressed that this prompt action was necessary to prevent further harm, potentially even murder.

“In a video that went viral, the suspect assaulted his wife, causing severe injuries, and this is not the first time such violence has occurred,” stated SP MacDon.

“As an agency saddled with the protection of lives and property and maintenance of law and order, we cannot allow Barrister Ebong to continue this flagrant abuse of human rights, hence, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olatoye Durosinmi ordered the arrest of the suspect to prevent murder and breakdown of law and order.

“The CP has warned perpetrators of violent crimes in the State to desist forthwith while urging family members to endeavour to resolve disputes amicably rather than resorting to violent attacks.

“Barr Sunday Ebong will have his day in court as soon as investigation is concluded.”

The Commissioner of Police warned individuals involved in violent crimes in the state to desist from such acts. He urged families to seek amicable resolutions to disputes, discouraging resorting to violence.

The arrest came in response to a disturbing video that circulated widely on social media, highlighting the urgent need to address domestic violence and protect the dignity and rights of individuals, particularly women, within homes and communities.
